Instagram Growth Hacks!

A few weeks ago I gave you my top Instagram growth tips. So now that we have done the basics, the account is set up, the content is valuable and we are promoting the page to our potential followers online and offline - how do we make our attempts go further? I’ll let you in on my secrets. 8 Hacks that can make all the difference!

Hack 1: Text replacement for hashtags and commenting & replying to messages. (so you can do more in a day)

To grow your Instagram account, you need to have real engagement on other profiles and comment on other users’ posts. Now, this can be a tedious and long enduring task, that can take a lot of time out of your day. So to streamline this process and get the most varied comments posted on various profiles, we recommend setting up text replacement & quick replies. This way you don’t need to leave the app to go and copy and paste hashtags, nor “common responses”

This is good for two reasons: You can reply to comments on your own posts quickly, and in longer form. And you can post on other profiles quicker, and seem more sincere. Instead of replying with  :) when someone sends you a *thumbs-up or comments a generic “this is cool”, you can now program your phone to help responses to be the longer form like “Thank you. I am really happy that enjoy my content. Have you checked out my latest blog? It's all about xxx” by typing only two to three “words”

You can set up various text replacements, and then build stories from them

Instagram also has built in “Quick Replies” which helps you reply to Direct messages in a flash!

Hack 2: Archive older posts, instead of deleting to make space or hide (and not lose your content)

Archiving older posts instead of deleting them is something that I really like. I’ve been wanting to remove my older posts, without deleting them because some of the content is really valuable to me, but no longer works for my brand on the ‘gram. (I also didn’t want to lose my accounts post count, and look like a total newbie by deleting everything and starting new…) So, archiving has been great! I can now save my older posts in an archive, that allows me to go back in there, and re-use them later - without losing any of the likes or engagement on them!

Hack 3: Add a check-in location to allow users to check in to your business (that geotag swag)

Create your business location on Facebook, and then allow users on Instagram to tag you when they are at your venue, use your products or attend your events.

So how do you create a geotag for your business?

You need to “register” the location of your business using your Facebook app. Facebook and Instagram are linked. And as you may know, Instagram is owned by Facebook.

  • You need to go through Facebook first to register your new location:

  • Press on the “Check In” feature on Facebook to create a new location

  • Make sure you turn on your Location services

  • Then pick a name for your location

  • Select “add” and your location should be ready to use on Instagram too.

  • TIP: Tag all your photos using this location to make sure Facebook and Instagram recognise this as a location.

Hack 4: Add # to your stories (And hide them to not look spammy, but get your stories ranked higher)

Stories are like posts - if you want to increase reach, add hashtags and geotags. You can add the geotag by using the built-in location feature on stories. But how about hashtags? How do I add these without looking spammy? Well, there are 2 ways to do this, depending on the image /video you are posting.

-Select the “aa” option and paste all your hashtags.

-Pinch to make them as small as you possibly can.

-Stick a sticker over them/ a gif over them or anything else you want that can cover them OR

-Select the colour dropper, pick the colour of the background, and make the text the same colour and it will just melt away.

-Done. Your story now has hashtags hidden in there :)

Hack 5: Make your static images on stories display twice as long

Static images on stories are previewed for 7 seconds. Videos can be up to 15 seconds. This is a small hack to make the preview of your static image last just that little bit longer! Use a gif on your image. This pushes the preview from 7 to 15 seconds. Why would you want to do this? Well, you get 8 seconds longer to be in front of your audience, and to potentially make a lasting impression.

Don’t knock the seconds, every opportunity for screen time counts!

Hack 6: This is a tooltip, use Continual to create longer stories on the fly (without having to record, then CutStory, then upload)

So from my list, this is the only one that has a small investment. (If you can find a similar app that does the same and is free, share it with me in the comments!) This is an app you can buy from the App store which allows you to make longer live snippets in stories without cutting out (It still posts in 15-minute slides, but you don’t have to pause your sentence midway and click record again. ) It's only about $10 or so for this app, and well worth it! Especially if you are telling many longer stories on the ‘Gram and you want to stop being interrupted mid thought by the “record” button!

Hack 7: add your username at the end of your caption to encourage users to click to your profile (most won't scroll back up, so give them something to click on!)

If you have managed to disrupt the consumer flow, by triggering a user to stop, look at your picture and read your caption, you would want to include a CALL TO ACTION. You want to encourage them to visit your profile and click the link at the top. Most users don’t scroll back up, instead, they read the caption and continue. So give them that extra nudge. Add “want to know more about this? Check out @brandname latest story / our newest blog / latest post from the link in my bio. (Or something along those lines.)

Hack 8: Appear in More Search Results on the Explore Page (Insta SEO)

Did you know that the “Name” field in your Instagram bio is searchable? That means that you can change it to words that highlights what your Instagram profile or business is about. By including important keywords in your Name field, your chances of appearing in Instagram’s results if anyone searches for those keywords will be much higher. How to do it:

Tap on “Edit Profile” on the top right of your Instagram profile.

Under your profile picture, you”ll find the â”Name” field. Change the text here to include your keywords

Once finished, tap “Done” on the top right corner of your screen, and voila. You are ready to be found in more than one way!
